Fitz-Gerald Campaign challenges Polis and Shafroth to Complete Boulder County Platform Survey

Disrespectful to voters; Survey is long past overdue

WESTMINSTER, Colo.—Today the congressional campaign of Senator Joan Fitz-Gerald called upon her Democratic primary opponents, Jared Polis and Will Shafroth, to complete and make available the Boulder County Platform Survey. The deadline was on February 28, 2008. The 2nd Congressional District Assembly is on May 10th.

"Part of being in a legislative body is having to make real choices and take votes. Will and Jared can't just sit on the sidelines. Voters deserve to know where they stand on the important issues facing this district," said Mary Alice Mandarich, campaign manager for Senator Fitz-Gerald. "The platform committee worked long and hard on developing the surveys and it is disrespectful to them and to the voters to ignore it."

In 2006, Jared Polis filled out a personal survey as a member of the State Board of Education where he voted "no" to immediate withdrawal from Iraq. He voted "no" in opposing vouchers. He voted against higher pay for university professors. Polis also voted to make the Bush tax cuts permanent. And in direct contradiction to his current stance now, voted "no" for universal single payer health care. Just recently, on March 13,2008, his campaign issued a press release, "Polis Commits 100% Transparency to his campaign." Will Shafroth has not previously completed the questionnaire for public review.

"Out of respect for voters and the process, we challenge them fill it out and turn it in," said Mandarich. "Neither candidate has legislative experience and that makes this questionnaire particularly important. What are they waiting for?"

The survey encompasses a broad range of policy questions ranging from the war in Iraq, health care, constitutional rights and campaign reform. Senator Fitz-Gerald used it as an opportunity to highlight her positions of immediate withdrawal from Iraq, universal single payer healthcare and protecting civil liberties of Americans.
